While most of Gauteng was preoccupied with the on-going President’s Cup, the Western Cape hosted its own championship show at Constantia Valley Riding Club for its Pony Riders. Although the entries were nowhere near that of the Gauteng event, the quality and talent shown by the Western Cape riders was something to behold. A show with spectacular sponsorship, beautiful scenery, and expert organisation by Larissa Williams, the weekend was a sure-fire success.
The riders, parents, and coaches all arrived at a beautifully set up venue ready for a weekend of competition and ready to showcase their talents. With 4 classes assigned to each height category including the final championship event, ponies and riders had their work cut out for them.

The 1st 1.00m class, sponsored by NC Photography, was run as a regular one round with a jump-off where the fastest rider with the least amount of penalties in the jump-off would claim victory. Daliah Althans and Rivendell Waimea Bay claimed victory here, while 2nd place was awarded to Kyla-Rose Tabraham aboard her pony, Lipizza Torretto Sahara. The Ebb & Flow Stables-sponsored 1.10m/1.20m competition was run under the same format, with the victory going to the talented young Ella Murphy and Noordhoek Farm Village’s Henham Magoo.
Class two for the riders would be an accumulator over eight fences with a joker. Daliah Althans and Rivendell Waimea Bay once again claimed victory in the 1.00m category, while second place was claimed by Elspeth Walton riding Robyn Salters’ Mampro Cool Alley. The 1.10m/1.20m class victory was sealed by Ella Murphy and Henham Magoo as they claimed two for two on the first day of the event. With both Daliah and Ella claiming double victories for the day, the Victor Ludorum trophies were well within reach.
Sunday’s classes began with the 1.00m A2 competition, one round on time, sponsored by the Luechinger family. 6 Pony Riders took part, all vying for the win, and with several available turns and places to make up time, it would ultimately be Kyla-Rose Tabraham who would take the top spot on the podium with Lipizza Torretto Sahara. 2nd place in this speedy competition was awarded to Samira Luechinger riding Say Geronimo. The Beddow family sponsored the 1.10/1.20m A2 competition, a class that saw Ella Murphy and Henham Magoo take their third victory of the weekend in what was quickly becoming a dominant display of showjumping.
With the fans watching on eagerly from the sidelines, the championship classes were the last events of the weekend. The Royal Horse 2020 Western Cape Pony Rider Championship titles were up for grabs, and in the 1.00m class, sponsored by the Tabraham family, six future stars gave their all. In at number 1, Daniel Beddow and Edito Flight Of Venus flew through the course to ultimately score a 2nd place finish while Daliah Althans and Rivendell Waimea Bay raced through the finish beams to claim victory in the 1.00m Western Cape Championship. With the consistency shown by Daliah, She also received the Victrix Ludorum trophy, sponsored by Equestrian Affair, to cap off a wonderful show.
The main class of the event, the 1.10m The Royal Horse Championship signified the end of the show and would herald the arrival of a new Western Cape Pony Rider Champion. Two riders and three ponies were entered across the handicapped 1.10/1.20m class, but with a dominant display throughout the preceding classes, it came as little surprise to onlookers that Ella Murphy and Noordhoek Farm Village’s Henham Magoo would be crowned champions and take home the Victrix Ludorum award after a flawless show together.
