With the 2020 Burlington Cup in full swing, riders have been performing at their best to enable them to qualify for their respective championship classes. But, just two days in, one horse and rider combination has already captured our attention as a superb prospect for the future – Amy Engelbrecht and Artav’s Spartanetta.

KwaZulu-Natal-based Amy Engelbrecht has been an open grade rider for a number of years with several appearances in the 1.50m level with both Artav’s La Conda and Artav’s Cruise Control. However, her top-level career was halted after a non-riding-related injury sidelined her for an extended period of time. She’s back now, though, and in addition to her top-level horses, Amy is building up her string of up-and-comers, including the striking and very impressive Artav’s Spartanetta. The Burlington Cup marked the first occasion that spectators outside of KZN have seen Spartanetta in action, but the mare looks certain for a future at the top of the sport.

Currently competing in the 1.20m classes, this bright bay, 8-year-old Oldenburg mare, by Spartacus out of a Cornet Obolensky mare, has all the right attributes of a top-level showjumper. With a keen attitude, a bounce in her step, enormous amounts of scope, and an incredibly fluid motion as she jumps, Spartanetta, under the guidance of Amy Engelbrecht and coach, Deirdre Fox, is sure to be one to keep an eye on in the future.

We wish Amy and Spartanetta all the best – this is a pairing to keep an eye on.
