WATCH: Capital Stud Pays Tribute To Don Cumarco

Yesterday was an emotional day for many at the Shongweni Club outside of Hillcrest in KZN. Not only was Nicole Horwood crowned the 2020 SA Showjumping Champion, but the industry bid a fond farewell to two of the greatest horses the sport has ever seen. Cathryn and Shaun Neill retired Clyde Z ahead of the final class, while the moment was also shared by Nicole Horwood and Henning Pretorius, who retired the great Capital Don Cumarco. Those who watched the live streaming of the day’s proceedings would’ve also been witness to a touching tribute video to Don Cumarco – a video that has now been shared by Capital Stud for all to see.

There was not a dry eye in the house as the world of showjumping said goodbye to Don Cumarco. The quadruple SA Derby winner arguably cemented the Capital Stud in the hearts and minds of South African equestrians, and his records are unlikely to be toppled any time soon, or ever. Despite spending many of his 17 years in Gauteng and at the Capital farm in Hartbeespoort, he will be retired to the recently-acquired Summerhill Stud farm in KZN, where Henning Pretorius, founder and owner of Capital Stud, says he’ll have the best paddock on the farm. He can be seen below being released into his new paddock after yesterday’s retirement ceremony.

While Don Cumarco won’t be returning to the ring anytime soon, his legacy lives on in his numerous progeny, many of which are coming up for auction this coming week in Capital Stud’s first-ever online auction.
