FEI Confirms 2021 Showjumping Rule Updates

With the conclusion of the 2020 showjumping season, many equestrians will already be keeping their eyes on the 2021 calendar and what the next showjumping year has in store, including the updated FEI 2021 showjumping rules. With several major changes taking effect on the 1st of January including the updated hind boot rules, it’s best to get a look at the new rules before you head to your first competition in the new year.

Some of the less important rule changes in the Jumping rules include new regulations on ‘Liverpool’ fences and the placement over the water trays under such elements which may not be placed behind the front pole (FEI Art 211.11). Other amendments include those on show jackets, which may now be any colour (FEI Art 256.1.5). The ruling on rowel spurs (FEI Art 256.1.11) has also been clarified for easier understanding, now reading: “Rowel spurs, that is spurs with a notched or serrated rotating disc, are not authorised anywhere within the grounds of international Jumping Events; spurs with a rotating disc that is not notched or serrated are allowed.”

With regards to Pony Riders, the rules under Annex XI have been adjusted as well, with clarification given under Art 21.1.1.2 as to the makeup of nosebands. The new wording states that “Nosebands must be flat. Nosebands constructed from materials other than leather are not permitted, with the exception of the front part of the noseband which may optionally be made of non-abrasive synthetic material. A small disc of sheepskin may be used in the intersection of the two leather straps of a crossed noseband.” The red wording highlights the updated change for the new year.

The new year will also see rule amendments in the Veterinary Regulations, which covers all disciplines including eventing and endurance, and will see the new rule of whisker trimming come into effect as of the 1st of July. Several updates with regards to Pony Heights and measurement protocols have been adjusted. The General Regulations have also seen a major revamp, however, there don’t appear to be rule changes relevant to showjumping athletes.

While there have been no changes to the Equine Prohibited Substances List for 2021, the FEI Equine Anti-Doping and Controlled Medication Regulations have seen some updates and should be read by all athletes who compete in international competition such as FEI World Cup Qualifiers, FEI World Jumping Challenges as well as National Status shows such as South African Championship Title competitions and Outdoor Grands Prix.
