Tragedy strikes at Reonet Riders Grand Prix for Ian van Schalkwyk

The Reonet Riders Grand Prix, hosted at Kyalami Equestrian Park this past weekend, was a mixed bag of emotions for many across the showjumping community. The first national status competition of the 2021 showjumping calendar also began the Riders Grand Prix series which runs through the year to crown a Gold, Silver, and Bronze winner. But unfortunately, it was also the event that saw Ian van Schalkwyk sidelined once again.

While it is often said that the showground medics are most appreciated when they are not needed, this past weekend was an entirely different affair as the medics were kept very busy with multiple freak accidents across the show grounds including that of Ian van Schalkwyk. A leg injury late in 2019 saw Ian endure a lengthy recovery, after which he returned to competition at the SA Outdoor Grand Prix in December 2020 on his young horse Capital Kosmo. The industry was relieved to welcome Ian back to the competitive circuit and was looking forward to seeing him rejoin the 1.50m ranks on Kuda Insurance Capital Don Costello. The 2021 season had other plans in store, though.

Entered into the 1.30m competitions on both Don Costello and Kuda Insurance Airborn, Ian was in the practice arena preparing for his first competition in the open grades since his return. An unfortunate accident occurred where Ian and Don Costello parted ways and Ian hit the ground with his weight on his arm causing his left humerus to snap. While the medics attended to him swiftly and many other riders jumped into action to assist wherever possible, the unfortunate accident is another blow to Ian who has been desperately awaiting his return to the competitive ranks.

While we’re uncertain as to whether Ian’s horses will be ridden once again by Colin Ferreira while Ian is once again sidelined, we know that Ian’s tenacity, positivity, and fighting spirit will see him back again, hopefully, better than ever. The additional support from his London Lane Livery family will ensure that Ian receives the best aftercare and motivation to return to the saddle as soon as is medically possible.

Ian, we wish you a speedy and safe recovery and hope that this is the last of the misfortune you endure.
