Show Report: 2020 KwaZulu-Natal Champs

The AnA Insurance-sponsored KZN Closed Champs took place this past weekend on the 10th and 11th October, hosted by Triple P Shows at The Durban Shongweni Club where the best Natal-based competitors took to the ring to showcase their talents.

2 titles were on offer for the 2020 edition of the show: the Junior KZN Championship and the Adult KZN Championship where 6 and 24 entrants, respectively would compete for the honour of being crowned champion.

The warm-up class would be a combined class of the two age categories over a Brett Webber-designed 1.30m/1.35m track for the Laser Support Services A2 Competition. The competition saw some beautiful rounds and some wonderful riding to decide the podium places. Taking the top step was Jessica Prince riding the ever-competitive Cloud 9 while second place went to Amy Engelbrecht riding Artav’s La Conda. Rounding out the top 3 was Ryan Wallbridge on Shelly Moore’s Opal de la Bastide.

1.30m/1.35m Competition podium placings

The Junior KwaZulu-Natal Championships saw 6 hopeful young combinations take on the testing 1.30m track. With 3 clear round riders through to the jump-off and 2 places on offer, the top podium place of the Junior KZN Championship went the way of the very speedy Callaho Laios and Alexandra Ric-Hansen in 35.11 seconds. 2nd place was awarded to the pairing of Elliot Vance and Amy Chelsea Michau.

24 entrants lined up next to compete for the title of Adult KwaZulu-Natal Champion over a 1.35m/1.40m championship track run under the FEI rule, Art 238.2.2. The first round saw 8 competitors jumping clear and avoiding time penalties to put them through to the jump-off, one step closer to the title. 4 riders completed their jump-off rounds, leaving four clears to vie for the podium places. While Jodi Pieters and Kuda’s King of Hearts went clear to take home 4th place Jessica Prince aboard Callaho Concudo broke the finish beams in 36.50 seconds to secure a 3rd place podium. The final 2 podium places were secured by Amy Engelbrecht on Artav’s La Conda in 2nd in a time of 36.23 seconds, while winning the Adult Kwazulu-Natal 1.35m/1.40m Champion title in 34.52 seconds was Heather Mostert and the very talented mare, Conthezze.
